2006 Unsung Hero Award Winner
Mr. Raymond Garcia received the Virginia Trela "Unsung Hero" Award as its first recipient. Mr. Garcia began volunteering as a VIPS volunteer in February 1999 at the Franklin Avenue School, tutoring students in reading. He continues to work at the school, this year in Carly Bannish's 4th grade classroom. Ms. Bannish says, "He supports our learners with kindness, calm, trust and dedication that he brings to each and every one of the children works with weekly." Several years later he added the Juniper Park Elementary School to his volunteering schedule working with Mrs. Cindy Gaylord in her classroom. "He gives freely of his time and is a valuable asset to every classroom he enters. He is consistent, compassionate, encouraging, and supportive." says Mrs. Gaylord. Garcia was presented with the award by VIPS coordinator, Mrs. Barbara Trant.
