receive the Virginia Trela Unsung Hero Award
at the 2014 Volunteer Brunch

Our ninth recipient of the "Unsung Hero" award was presented to the
Read to Rover Dogs & Handlers. This group includes Melissa Kielbasa from Sandy Meadow Farm Dog Obedience School, her handlers from the K-9's for Kids Pediatric Therapy Unit and their dogs. The Read to Rover program was nominated by Franklin Avenue School where the dogs have been part of their school for many years bringing joy to the students’ lives. The students have the opportunity to practice oral reading, enhance self-esteem, improve communication skills and in return receive  unconditional love and acceptance that the dogs provide. In a cozy area    with pillows, the dogs sit, lie or snooze as they and their handlers patiently and gently support the students in the reading process. While the    nomination originated from Franklin Elementary School the dogs visit    Abner Gibbs and Highland Elementary Schools as well.
